An Iowa man hosted 600 people, including many from neighboring states, at a horse auction Thursday in defiance of social distancing rules, Des Moines CBS affiliate KCCI reported.
Ura Gingerich, operator of the Midwest Trotting Horse Sale in Seymour, Iowa, held the auction, according to CNN. Visitors from Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri and Wisconsin put their lives at risk to buy the horses.
All people entering the auction were screened for the virus, CNN reported. About 150 horses were sold.
Wayne County health administrator Shelly Bickel told CNN that despite health risks and the poor social distancing optics, officials couldn’t legally do anything about the auction.
After the event, Iowa changed the rules so that no more than 10 people are allowed at an animal auction.
Nearly 700 Iowans have tested positive for COVID-19, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins. Eleven people in the state have died from the disease.
