More than 3,600 people in Iran have died from coronavirus so far.

Iran’s president will begin to end restrictions meant to curb the spread of coronavirus, even as the pandemic guts his country.

Hassan Rouhani said Sunday that so-called “low-risk activities" will resume next weekend everywhere but Tehran, which will reopen a week later, according to state media.

“Two-thirds of all Iranian government employees will work out of the office from Saturday," he said. “The decision does not contradict stay at home advice by the health authorities.”

Rouhani did not specify what qualifies as “low-risk,” but did announce that “high-risk activities,” including schools, sporting events and religious celebrations, will be suspended until at least April 18.

Iran has faced criticism as the government has struggled to shut down the country and keep people at home.

As of Sunday, more than 3,600 people in Iran have died from coronavirus among more than 58,000 cases, according to Health Ministry spokesman Kianush Jahanpur. But the spread has slowed for the fifth straight day, leading some to believe Iran may have reached its peak.
