A veteran FDNY chief in charge of fire protection inspectors has died from coronavirus, becoming the second active member of the department to succumb to the illness.
Deputy Chief Inspector Syed Rahman, 59, passed away earlier this week after 22 years with the FDNY, officials said.
Rahman was responsible for the day-to-day management of a highly-trained team of fire protection inspectors assigned to the Department’s Bureau of Management Analysis and Planning, Office of Internal Audit and Control.
The Queens resident headed a unit that audited inspections on potentially high-risk city buildings under construction, demolition or asbestos abatement.
At the time of his death, he was preparing to assist the Bureau of Fire Prevention on COVID-19 building capacity enforcement, the FDNY said.
He is the second active member of the FDNY to die from coronavirus. Ambulance mechanic James Villecco, 55, of Staten Island, passed away Sunday.
Retired FDNY battalion chief Al Petrocelli, who lost his son on 9/11, also died of the disease on Wednesday at 73 years old.
376 FDNY members have tested positive for COVID-19.
An FDNY spokesman called Deputy Chief Inspector Rahman, “a dedicated Inspector, beloved husband and father, and a friend to all he worked with each day.”
He is survived by his wife, Sadia, and their four sons, authorities said.
