Jade Hameister is an incredible explorer. Earlier this month, the 16-year-old became the youngest person to conquer the Polar Hat Trick – having skied to the North Pole, skated across Greenland’s largest ice cap, and skied down to the South Pole. The feat is considered almost impossible to pull off – and at her young age, it’s particularly impressive. But when Jade gave an inspirational TEDx talk in Melbourne, the comments were flooded with misogynists throwing retro sexist putdowns at her. ‘Good on you sweetie,’ one patronising misogynist wrote. ‘Maybe you could find a successful husband and make him a sandwich.’ Others – and there were a number of them – just wrote: ‘Make me a sandwich’

In response, when Jade skied down to the South Pole earlier this month, she wrote a short, snappy response to her critics.

She posted a photo on Facebook, posing in ski gear with a sandwich. ‘Tonight (it never gets dark this time of year) I skied back to the Pole again… to take this photo for all those men who commented “Make me a sandwich” on my TEDx talk,’ she wrote. ‘I made you a sandwich (ham & cheese). Now ski 37 days and 600km to the South Pole and you can eat it. xx’

Jade travelled for 37 days with her father, her guide Eric Philips, and a two-person camera team from the National Geographic, which is going to release a documentary about her later this year. However, she reached her final destination alone – having pulled her own 220lb sled for 373 miles.

Afterwards she told CNN that the idea of taking a sandwich to the pole was a running joke throughout the trip, but she didn’t decide to actually do it until the last minute. ‘The camp we were staying at was less than a (kilometre) away from the actual pole, so we were like “let’s just do this”,’ she said. ‘There have been a lot of comments on it, which I didn’t really expect, but I guess it’s just kind of funny.’ Now, she’s going back to Melbourne to start sixth form.
