A senior Iranian official warned on Tuesday that his country will retaliate against Israeli "aggression" in Syria.

"We are in Syria at the request of the Syrian government," said Alaeddin Boroujerdi, president of Iran's parliamentary foreign affairs committee, according to AFP.

"The aggression of the Zionist entity on our advisers in Syria guarantees us the right of response," he added.

"We will respond at the right time and place," he told a news conference in the Syrian capital Damascus.

Boroujerdi was speaking at the end of a two-day visit to Syria, during which he met President Bashar Al-Assad.

His comments follow air strikes attributed to Israel on military bases in the Syrian city of Hama where Iranian advisers were stationed.

A monitor said the missile strikes killed 26 pro-regime fighters, most of them Iranians, in a raid it said bore the hallmarks of an Israeli operation.

Two weeks ago, Syrian media reported that the country’s air defenses responded to a missile attack over Homs, shooting down three missiles targeting the Shayrat air base, which was attacked by the United States last year following a chemical attack in Khan Sheikhun.

Later, however, a senior Syrian official said the incident was a false alarm and claimed that the malfunction had been caused by a “joint electronic attack” by Israel and the U.S. on Syria’s radar network.

On April 9, a military base in the central Syrian city of Homs was targeted in a missile strikealso attributed to Israel.

Russia, Iran and Syria have all accused Israel of carrying out the Homs strike. Iran has threatened to hit back at Israel for that attack.
