A British BASE jumper has been killed after smashing against the side of a Swiss cliff 'while attempting a double flip'.

The unnamed 44-year-old had jumped from a take-off point near the village of Murren in Switzerland’s Lauterbrunnen area - known as a paradise for extreme sport.

The British man suffered fatal injuries after crashing into a cliff face with the parachute left hanging off the rocks.

Video footage of the helicopter's attempts to reach the body was posted on Facebook by professional BASE jumper Jeb Corliss.

Corliss addressed the incident in a comment to the video posted on his page, which has some 345,000 followers, saying the Briton had 'tried to do acrobatics and didn’t do them fast enough'.

'If someone had told me they were going to try and do a double front flip from the nose I would have told them they were going to die.

'The cliff is not good for acrobatics. It’s a tracking cliff or wingsuit cliff only.'

The man's body was later recovered, and local police confirmed that he was dead by the time rescue teams reached him.

'An investigation is being carried out to find out what went wrong after the man's chute was deployed,' a police spokesperson said.

'It is believed he died as a result of the collision with the cliff.

'A rescue helicopter was quickly on the scene but there was nothing that could be done for the man, his body was trapped for some time on the side of the cliff face.'
