COVID-19, the disease caused by the fast-spreading novel coronavirus, is killing more Americans on a daily basis than any other health problem – including cancer and heart disease.

A new graph published this week by Maria Danilychev, a San Francisco-based physician, showed the illness is causing about 1,970 deaths in the U.S. per day, according to Newsweek. Heart disease is the next deadliest, claiming around 1,774 American lives on a daily basis, followed by cancer, which leaves 1,641 people dead every day.

It also reflects a big spike in coronavirus-related deaths in recent days. In the same graph published by Danilychev last week, COVID-19 was the third deadliest daily killer, with an average of 704 deaths a day.

As of Friday morning, the global pandemic has killed more than 16,600 people in America, where there have been 466,299 cases of the illness so far. It accounts for nearly a third of the global number of cases, which currently stands at more than 1.6 million

According to the graph, which is based on data from the CDC and COVID-19 statistics from Worldometers.info, the daily death rate linked to coronavirus began to spike last month, and on March 22 surpassed the flu and pneumonia, kidney disease, suicide, and liver disease in daily death rates.

By the month’s end only cancer and heart disease proved more deadly on a daily basis.

While the latest numbers prove a grim milestone for the virus, recent data suggests coronavirus case numbers are diminishing in some of the heaviest hit areas, including in New York, where hospitalization rates have recently dipped.

Experts have teetered back and forth on just how many deaths will be linked to COVID-19 should it endure. Initial projections from Dr. Deborah Birx and Dr. Anthony Fauci’s White House Coronavirus Task Force put the figure between 100,000 and 240,000.

Those projections have fallen drastically however in a model produced by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington in Seattle, which has been a common reference point for officials and medical professionals.

Earlier this week, the agency estimated there will be 60,415 US deaths related to the coronavirus.

Birx attributed the decrease to Americans’ willingness to stay at home and their ongoing participation in social distancing.
