From behind bars, Florida prisoners will be making coronavirus masks to protect their watchers.
Inmates in the Florida Department of Corrections who work with the Prison Rehabilitative Industries and Diversified Enterprises will transition “clothing production activities” to producing cloth face coverings, the FDC said in a statement over the weekend.
But the masks will not be given to prisoners, but rather to correctional officers, probation officers and staff in high-risk geographic areas of the state.
After that, the coverings will be distributed to “institutions which have large at-risk inmate populations,” the FDC said.
A spokesperson for the Department of Corrections did not return a message from the Daily News asking about the protections provided to the inmates.
“It’s critical we take all precautions necessary to minimize the potential risk to the inmate population and staff charged with their care and custody," FDC Secretary Mark Inch said in a statement.
As of Sunday afternoon, 36 inmates and 44 employees in the Florida correctional system have tested positive for coronavirus, according to the state.
