The coronavirus pandemic killed 833 French people in just 24 hours, making it the nation’s deadliest day since the global outbreak started in China and quickly spread to the rest of the world.

Health Minister Olivier Véran warned Monday that despite the tragic figure, France has still not yet seen the worst of the virus, BBC News reported.

“We have not reached the end of the ascent of this epidemic,” he said. “We must keep up our efforts as citizens by staying at home."

The total number of cases, combining hospital and nursing home statistics, increased by 5,171 between Sunday and Monday to 98,010.

By early Tuesday, the number of infected climbed to 98,984, meaning France will likely become the fifth country, after Italy, Spain, the United States and Germany, to reach the 100,000-case milestone.

Véran attributed the spike in part to French officials’ recent decision to present figures that include data from nursing homes, which have been particularly hard hit amid the pandemic. He said deaths at facilities across the nation account for almost 27% of those killed overall.

Nursing homes deaths also rose 10% to 2,417 over the weekend, bringing the total to 8,911 as of Sunday, according to Reuters.

The recent numbers out of France also mark the first acceleration in deaths after several days of slowing.

According to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University, there have been a total of 1,359,398 coronavirus cases and more than 75,000 deaths worldwide.
