A New Jersey woman lost her sister and mother just hours apart and fears coronavirus may have claimed them both.

Rhoda Ruiz was hospitalized a week ago and diagnosed with COVID-19, South Brunswick resident Jessia Ingaglio told NBC 4 News on Wednesday. Her father also tested positive and was being treated.

Then, Sunday, her sister, Amanda Ruiz, who suffered from diabetes, “started getting sick and throwing up.”

Ingaglio called 911, but EMTs later told her Amanda had refused to go to the hospital. She was found dead in her home on Monday.

The cause of death is unclear, and she had not been tested for the coronavirus, but Ingaglio fears she could have contracted it from her parents.

Ingaglio had to then inform her ailing mother over the phone about Amanda’s death, she said. Then on Tuesday, her mother was gone.

"The only hope I have out of this is that, she knew Amanda was gone and she needed to be with her daughter," Ingaglio told NBC 4 News.

More than 44,400 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in New Jersey. The state has the second highest number of positive cases, but remains far behind New York, which has more than 140,000.

The coronavirus has killed more than 1,230 people in New Jersey. About 100 of those have been in Middlesex County.
