New York City suspended alternate-side parking for another two weeks through at least April 28 during the coronavirus pandemic.
The rules forcing drivers to move their cars to make way for street sweeping and garbage collection have been suspended since March 18 as the city encourages New Yorkers to stay home to stop the spread of the deadly virus.
“To the maximum extent possible we can give people this relief I want to do it,” Mayor de Blasio said at a briefing Monday.
The mayor initially worried the city would be “less and less clean” during a health crisis if he suspended the rules.
“We’ve been monitoring,” de Blasio said Monday. “Neighborhoods remain clean in large measure because so few people are out and about the way they normally are so we actually see a level of cleanliness that is the right one for our city.”
De Blasio said the suspension of alternate side parking was an issue “we all care about,” though only 45% of city households own cars. He said the city could extend the suspension even further depending how the pandemic unfolds.
New Yorkers who are in quarantine or under isolation who have gotten parking tickets can appeal to the city with medical documentation.
Payment for parking meters remains in effect across the city.
