Mayor de Blasio reported some progress in the fight against coronavirus on Wednesday as New York City saw more hospitalizations from suspected infections but fewer intensive care patients and a drop in positive test rates.
The city aims to see declines in all three indicators — new hospital admissions, ICU patients and percentage of positive tests — before some coronavirus restrictions are lifted.
“Progress, but not what we still need fully,” de Blasio said during a briefing Wednesday. “We have to stick to it.”
The number of people admitted to both public and private hospitals for suspected COVID-19 increased to 136 on Monday, up by 23 then the total new admissions made Sunday. The city reports the indicators with a two-day lag.
There were 734 people in ICUs at 11 public hospitals on Monday, a slight drop from the 745 the day before, according to the mayor.
Citywide, 23% of those tested came back positive as of Monday, down from 26% as of Sunday. For tests conducted by the city’s Public Health Lab, 29% came back positive as of Monday, significantly less from 56% as of Sunday.
The Public Health Lab conducts coronavirus testing for the sickest patients, compared to a broader portion of the population reflected in citywide testing.
The city wants all three indicators to go down for 10 consecutive days or over a period of two weeks before some coronavirus closures end.
The goal is for less than 200 new hospital admissions for suspected coronavirus and fewer than 375 people in critical care. The city wants to see fewer 15% of the citywide tests and 30% of the Public Health Lab tests to come back positive.
