A black bear wandered through the town of Millburn, New Jersey, drawing crowds and eventually escaped authorities attempts to capture him.

A bear in New Jersey remains on the loose after becoming a celebrity when it climbed a tree Monday to evade capture.

Residents in Millburn first reported spotting the dark, four-legged visitor moving through the town Monday morning. Authorities were on the lookout when the bear made its way up a tree.

The spectacle drew locals out of their homes, giving them something unexpected to break up the monotony of the coronavirus lockdown.

“The neighborhood lit up with email and texts,” Millburn resident Danny Mandel told CBS 2 News.

“I’ve been in the neighborhood 12 years, this is the first time I’ve ever seen a bear,” Lee Winter told the news outlet. “It’s the most exciting thing that’s happened to me in the quarantine.”

The black bear, the largest land mammal in New Jersey, remained in the tree for a long time. Officials indicated it’s not uncommon during this time of year to see bears out and about.

Authorities from the state’s Department of Environmental Protection Fish and Wildlife were on the scene. However, because the bear was so high in the tree, they could not safely use tranquilizers to capture it.

Experts instead chose to try and wait it out, and placed a trap in case he came down. The bear did eventually come down, and escape authorities.

“As of this morning, May 19, the bear has not yet been captured,” Millburn officials wrote on Facebook Tuesday morning.

They also warned residents to keep clear of the bear.

“Please use caution when leaving your homes today,” officials wrote. “Do not attempt to find or approach the bear.”
