Those familiar with the Caribbean Food Delights company are not at all surprised that CEO Sabrina HoSang Jordan, was named to the prestigious, statewide group of businesspersons consulting Gov. Cuomo on the safe resumption of commerce as coronavirus shutdowns and stay-at-home measures subside.
Last Thursday , Cuomo annouced the formation of the New York Forward Re-Opening Advisory Board as one step on the state’s road to recovery from economically-crippling COVID-19 precautionary measures.
“I understand that these are unprecedented times, and our suggestions will have a great impact on businesses and families all over New York State,” said HoSang Jordan. I look forward to upholding this responsibility while bearing all of my fellow New Yorkers in mind."

The Rockland County, New York-based family-owned firm,Caribbean Food Delights is the nation’s leading manufacturer of Caribbean frozen Jamaican style patties and other products.
HoSang Jordan worked in the business — founded in 1978 by her Jamcia-born parents, Vincent and Jeanette HoSang — during school breaks — became joined the company as director of operations in 2001. She was promoted to COO and later CEO. First located on Dyre Ave. in the Bronx, the firm is now located in Tappan, New York. Vincent HoSang is company president.
“We’ve come up with a phased plan to re-open New York so every region in the state has the same opening template as we begin this process,” said Gov. Cuomo last week while announcing the state plan. “We have to be smart about this — emotions can’t drive our re-opening process — and we’ve come up with factual data points that each region must monitor as they begin to re-open,” said the governor, who created the advisory board of “business, academic, community and civic leaders from across the state to help guide this process and ensure businesses are following the necessary guidelines to preserve public health as we work towards a new normal.”
Laptops, tablets needed
To improve the odds for students in the University of the West Indies’ Mona campus in Jamaica who don’t have home computers to access classes remotely, the New York-based American Foundation for the University of the West Indies has launched a campaign to acquire 200 laptops and tablets for those in need.
The AFUWI initiative — done in collaboration with the UWI alumni chapters in New York, Florida and Washington, D.C. — is a reponse to Jamaica's mandatory online learning effort due to COVID-19 crisis.
This initiative is in close collaboration with the Alumni chapters of New York , Florida and Washington DC . Cancelling face-to-face examinations, the university is using online coursework, take-home assignments and projects to gauge students’ progress.
The goal of the American Foundation for the University of the West Indies effort to raise funds to buy laptops for needy students who must learn remotely due coronavirus restrictions.(AFUWI)
“Unfortunately, some of them simply cannot afford to purchase these items and since they are not able to access the facilities on campus or share with other students due to social distancing strictures, they are at a distinct disadvantage,” said Ann-Marie Grant, executive director of AFUWI, adding that an estimated 2,000 students are in need of assistance.
The university has acquired 500 tablets with help from Jamaican government and the AFUWI project looks to purchase 200 laptops and tablets.
“We are asking for donations of $10 (US) or more during the period April 20-May 20, 2020, to help these students achieve their dreams of a university degree,” she said.

Cooking to help cope
Haiti-born chef, caterer and author Nadege Fleurimond is coming to the aid of the New Yorkers and other complying to COVID-19 stay-at-home measures through her “Quarantine Cooking Series” — available on her Facebook and Instagram pages.
"In order to keep myself sane and help you all along in the kitchen with some laughter and yumminess, I’ve taken to my social media pages to cook with you all, said Fleurimond. “I go live pretty much every other day with cooking sessions showing you how to make some of my favorite creations,” she said, noting that last week’s dishes included bread fruit salad, plantain lasagna, and her “Black Djon Djon Mushroom Seafood Paella.”

Giving cover at the front line
Jamaica-born fashion designer Glenroy March — who is making fashionable face masks through his D’Marsh Couture brand — when down to the front lines of the coronavirus fight recently to help from healthcare warriors.
March went to Brooklyn Hospital in Fort Greene, Brooklyn to donate masks to staffers and thanks the workers for their service. The desginer is due to make another donation to the hospital in the near future, and then get masks to workers at other frontline medical institutions in the tri-state.
