A London woman suffering from coronavirus symptoms for nearly two weeks was rushed to the hospital, where she learned the potentially deadly disease was actually the least of her problems.
Angela Schlegel was already battling COVID-19 at Royal Brompton Hospital’s intensive care unit when she was diagnosed with a condition called eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA), BBC reported.
Doctors said the heart defect — which causes severe asthma in addition to damaging the heart, joints, lungs, and nerves — could have proven fatal if it went undetected.
The added strain to her heart and lungs caused by coronavirus only increased her risks.
"It just blew my mind as I was told my heart was not functioning the way it should be,” Schlegel said. “If the EGPA was left undiagnosed I could have just dropped dead,”
The 36-year-old emphasized that while she is grateful doctors discovered the condition, her coronavirus infection nearly killed her.
She spent five weeks in the hospital battling the sickness, which has spread to more than 3 million people worldwide
“It saved my life in the long term, but in the short term coronavirus did nearly kill me,” Schlegel said.
