A South Carolina man who fatally shot his ex-girlfriend and two of her daughters before killing himself was in a jealous rage over a recent beach trip she took with another man, police said.

The devastating violence unfolded Sunday outside the St. Matthews home of Shanta Singleton, according to a police report obtained by the Times and Democrat of Orangeburg on Tuesday. The mother-of-four was approached around 7 p.m. Sunday by her former boyfriend, Gabriel Jordan, who immediately started to strangle her.

Her youngest daughter, 12-year-old Tre’vay Stroman, attempted to free Singleton from Jordan’s grasp by jumping on his back, but she was fatally shot during her rescue attempt. Jordan then turned around and shot Singleton’s 18-year-old daughter, Shantasia Stroman, who was still able to run for help.

Police said she was struck in the arm and is expected to recover.

As the teen fled, she saw Jordan with his gun chasing her 15-year-old sister Essence Stroman into the house, according to the report. Deputies found her dead inside a bedroom later the same evening while the bodies of Singleton and Tre’Vay Stroman were outside.

Authorities also discovered the body of Jordan nearby. The coroner said he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

One of the daughters told officers that they were on the way home from Myrtle Beach when they noticed Jordan was following them.

When they arrived at the residence, Singleton and Jordan began to argue, a daughter told deputies. She said her mother told Jordan that she was going to break up with him because she had a new boyfriend, who also went to the beach with them.

Calhoun County Sheriff Thomas Summers said Singleton and Jordan were “together off and on for many years,” adding that the slayings were the result of a “domestic violence argument that went really bad.”
