Thailand reported no new coronavirus infections or deaths Saturday, a government official said.
“Today there are two zeros ... thank you all Thais who have given their cooperation,” Taweesin Wisanuyothin, a spokesman for the government’s Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration, said according to Reuters.
It is the second day since early March that no new daily cases were reported in Thailand, the first country outside of China to report a coronavirus infection.
On Wednesday, Taweesin cautiously celebrated the first day without a new positive case since March 9.
“We all can be relieved but not complacent,” he said. “We need to continue with the main measures ... wash hands, practice social distancing and wear masks.”
The news Saturday comes as the country prepares to allow more businesses to reopen, as it eases the strict lockdown rules put in place since late March, when daily cases surpassed 100.
Earlier this month the government allowed six types of business to reopen, including outdoor markets, barbershops and pet groomers.
Starting on Sunday, some stores, nail salons, libraries and hotel meeting rooms will also be allowed to resume operation.
Gyms and massage parlors are still not allowed to reopen, although some yoga studios and swimming pools might also start operating again, as long as social-distancing measures are followed.
The government will also shorten its nighttime curfew by one hour.
“I expect our numbers to remain good so that we can further relax restrictions in the next phases to return to normalcy,” Taweesin said.
According to The Nation Thailand, Taweesin said that the country’s “key strategies to reduce community infection level is the 3Ts, which are tracing, testing and treatment.”
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Thailand reported 3,025 cases of the new coronavirus, including 56 deaths.
