New York City is on financial fumes warned Mayor de Blasio on Wednesday and may be forced to reduce the workforce on the front lines of the fight against coronavirus without help from the federal government.

Hizzoner said he and other leaders of cities and states across the country are “staring down the barrel of” devastating cuts within the municipal workforce without federal stimulus to help cover costs and revenue shortfalls caused by the pandemic.

“People are either acting on furloughs and layoffs or preparing for furloughs and layoffs of the exact people who have been the heroes in this crisis, who we should be celebrating and supporting, the first responders, the health care workers, the educators,” de Blasio said on CNN. “How are we going to support these people who we need if we don’t have any money?”

Coronavirus required millions in new spending and socked the city with some $7.4 billion in tax revenue shortfalls over the next two years. While multiple city agencies will reduce vacant positions and freeze hiring, de Blasio said last month that layoffs and furloughs are a “last resort.”

“I’ve lost $7.4 billion already and my economy can’t come back until I get that stimulus and get back to normal and provide those basic services,” he said on CNN Wednesday. “We’re running out of money,” de Blasio added on MSNBC

The mayor said he wants to “restart as quickly as possible” but stressed that the city cannot lift coronavirus restrictions and reopen parts of the economy unless basic services” can be provided and the disease’s grip on the five boroughs appears to subside.
