Cops have locked up a man on riot charges after a raucous crowd threw bottles at police in Harlem over the weekend, and the NYPD is vowing more arrests will follow.
Darryl Henderson, 58, was busted Monday, after the caught-on-video incident, which the city’s police unions described as the result of reform-minded politicians “surrendering our city.”
Police pulled up to Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd. and 133 St. around 3:45 a.m. Sunday to investigate a ShotSpotter activation, the NYPD’s high-tech sensors for detecting gunfire, according to police.
After recovering shell casings and fired bullets, the officers tried to disperse a crowd of more than 500 that had gathered on Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd between W. 131st and W. 133rd Sts., according to police.
The crowd pelted the officers, and their backup, with a rain of bottles, police said. The five-minute video ends with cops retreating a block down Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd. as the morning sun rises in the back ground.
Henderson is charged with riot, inciting to riot, reckless endangerment, attempted assault, criminal mischief and unlawful assembly.
“As we investigate the dangerous actions of individuals who threw bottles at our officers early Sunday morning in Harlem — tonight we can provide an update that one person has been arrested. Additional arrests are expected,” NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan tweeted Monday night.
