Kristen Stewart is trading in her fangs for a crown.

The “Twilight” alumnus will play Princess Diana in Pablo Larraín’s upcoming film, “Spencer,” which touches on the late royal’s fateful decision to step back from her marriage to Prince Charles and all that came with it, Deadline reported Wednesday.

“We all grew up, at least I did in my generation, reading and understanding what a fairy tale is,” the Chilean director (“Jackie”) told the outlet. “Usually, the prince comes and finds the princess, invites her to become his wife and eventually she becomes queen. That is the fairy tale.”

But, the 43-year-old director added, “When someone decides not to be the queen, and says, I’d rather go and be myself, it’s a big big decision, a fairy tale upside down. I’ve always been very surprised by that and thought it must have been very hard to do.”

Larraín went on to say that scenario “is the heart of the movie” and noted that it makes for “a great universal story.”

Of casting the 30-year-old “Personal Shopper” star, who wouldn’t exactly appear to be the default choice for the role in part because she’s stuck primarily to indies following “Twilight,” Larraín said, “To do this well, you need something very important in film, which is mystery.”

The “Charlie’s Angels” star, he added, “can be many things, and she can be very mysterious and very fragile [and] ultimately very strong as well, which is what we need. ... The way she responded to the script and how she is approaching the character, it’s very beautiful to see. I think she’s going to do something stunning and intriguing at the same time.”

Unlike 2013′s critically panned “Diana,” which starred Naomi Watts as the late Princess of Wales, “Spencer” doesn’t cover Diana’s sudden death in 1997. Instead, the film will focus on just three days in the early 1990s, displaying her and Charles’ decaying relationship as well as her bond with their sons, Princes William and Harry.

“We decided to get into a story about identity, and around how a woman decides somehow, not to be the queen,” Larraín told Deadline.

“She’s a woman who, in the journey of the movie, decides and realizes that she wants to be the woman she was before she met Charles,” he explained. “That’s why the movie is called ‘Spencer,' which is the family name she had before she met Charles.”

Production is currently anticipated to start early next year.
