Sally Pearson and her high school sweetheart husband Kieran have welcomed their first child.

The former Australian Olympic champion gave birth to a baby girl on Wednesday and revealed her name is Ruby Elizabeth.

The 33-year-old made the announcement with a picture of the happy family after Ruby's birth in hospital.

'We would like to introduce you all to Ruby Elizabeth Pearson,' the caption reads.

Pearson's post drew a wealth of congratulatory messages from a range of Australian sporting stars including surfing champion Mick Fanning and fellow Olympian Chloe Esposito.

The Queensland hurdler announced her pregnancy on social media in January just five months after retiring from athletics.

'To start the next chapter of our lives with such joy and love is more than we could’ve ever hoped for,' an Instagram post from Pearson reads.

Her announcement quashed any rumours of a dramatic Olympic comeback at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Pearson won gold in the 100m hurdles at the London Olympics in 2012 along with gold medals at the 2011 and 2017 world championships before retiring from athletics in 2019.

She spent 16 years on the Australian athletics team before a horror run of injuries brought forward the end of her career.

'I would love to have been a three-time Olympian. That disappoints me a little as well,' she told a media conference in August.

'At the same time, I am happy now. I’m relieved now that my career is over and there will be no more injuries and no more vomit sessions.'
