A bushwalker has been killed while hiking in Queensland's south-east.

The body of a hiker is being retrieved by emergency services at the Scenic Rim after the fatal accident.

The walker was apparently on a trail off Lower Portals Road at Mount Barney with small group of others when they fell to their death off a cliff.

Emergency services received the call out at around 10.45 am on Saturday morning.

A rescue helicopter was rushed to the scene but it was reportedly too late to save the bushwalker, reported the Courier Mail.

First responders were still on the scene at 3pm.

Mount Barney is one of Queensland's highest peaks, measuring in at 1,359 metres.

Lower Portals road is one of the access points to a remote area campground about four kilometres by foot.
