A 10-year-old girl has been found with her throat slit and words carved into her body before her 14-year-old cousin was arrested.

Police were called to a family farm in Gunnedah in northwest NSW about 7am on Wednesday after reports the younger girl was suffering serious injuries.

By the time police arrived the girl had already died and was found with a slit throat and her body mutilated.

Police were called to a family farm in Gunnedah (main street pictured) in northwest NSW about 7am on Wednesday after reports the younger girl had serious lacerations

The 10-year-old had travelled from Orange to stay with her 14-year-old cousin during the school holidays before her death on Wednesday morning.

It is believed the young girl's injuries had been inflicted with a knife.

The teenager's mother found the younger girl's dead body about 7.15am before calling emergency services, The Daily Telegraph reported.

Shortly after, officers found the 14-year-old girl on the property and said she was in a daze.

The teenager was arrested and taken to Gunnedah Police Station to be interviewed.

Police have refused to detail the girl's injuries or what type of weapon had been used.

Officers from Oxley Police District established a crime scene and forensic police are scouring the property for evidence.

Gunnedah is located more than 430 kilometres away from Sydney and has a population of just 13,000 people

The 14-year-old girl is being held at Gunnedah Police Station but no charges have been laid.

Gunnedah Mayor Councillor Jamie Chaffery told Daily Mail Australia the community's heartfelt prayers are with the family at the moment.

'They're dealing with this devastation of losing a young member of the family,' he said.

'The community has been through so much through three years of drought and COVID-19 but we are resilient and supportive of each other to get through the tough times.'

Councillor Chaffery said the community will be devastated by the 'tragic event'.

'We will be there to support each other and we will support the family,' he said.
