The blow almost sparked an all in brawl as players from both teams rushed in to defend their respective teammates.
Fans took to social media to savage the 28-year-old footballer for the reckless shot, which came moments after his younger brother and Tigers teammate Luciano Leilua was taken off the field following a hit to the head.
'Joey Leilua should be suspended for at least six weeks for the high shot on Dylan Edwards,' one incensed fan wrote on Twitter.
'Shot by Joey Leilua after the play is one of the grubbiest things I've seen in rugby league for many years,' another added.
'P***weak act by Joey Leilua,' wrote a third.
Meanwhile Fox Sports commentator Warren Smith went so far as to brand Leilua the worst signing in the competition's history.
'Not only should Joey Leilua get six weeks for his high shot on Dylan Edwards, at the end of the suspension the Tigers should tear up his contract,' Smith added.
