A father and son have filmed the terrifying moment a great white shark charged into their little boat.

Sean Vinar and son James Vinar encountered the apex predator while fishing 10km off the coast from Low Head, in Tasmania's north, on Wednesday.

After setting out early, they decided to do some deep sea fishing for flathead at Barrenjoey Island, or Tenth Island, where a known seal colony resides.

The pair had just circled the island and were turning back when they noticed seals coming towards them.

Sean slowed down to allow his son to film, when they felt something ram the 5.7 metre vessel.

'All of a sudden, we just had this mighty thump on the side of the boat, water flying through the air,' Sean told ABC News.

'In a bit of shock, I've looked up towards the front of the boat and there I can see a massive big, great white shark has come out of the water and opened its mouth and latched on to the front of boat where the anchor is.'

Sean watched the shark bit the anchor and, concerned about the damage to the boat, began to accelerate away slowly.

'The shark's let go, gone under the boat, hit the back of the boat and then done a massive tail flip right next to the back of the boat,' Sean said in the video.

Concerned the shark was trying to capsize the boat, Sean yelled at James to 'hold on' then floored it back to shore.

It is the second time this month Tasmanian fishermen have had a brush with a great white shark.

Ten-year-old Lucas Arnott, 10, was ripped from a fishing boat off the coast of Stanley, northwest Tasmania, by a shark on July 17.

He miraculously survived after his father jumped into the water and scared off the shark.
