A woman from Canada was caught on camera swinging a puppy on its leash in a senseless road rage attack.

Cellphone video shows two women fighting outside of their cars in Dartmouth, Halifax, when of them snatches the pet from another driver and begins hurling it round.

The attack was so sudden and swift there was nothing the woman could do to protect her dog.

The puppy ended up being slammed against the woman's head several times before finally the victim was able to wrestle her pet back.

Police are now investigating the horrific assault which occurred on July 1.

'The altercation started after two females in one vehicle confronted two females in the second vehicle regarding being cut off in a drive-thru,' Halifax police explained.

The encounter was spread over two videos reports CBC.

In the first, an argument breaks out with both vehicles stopped side-by-side.

The pair can be seen punching one another through an open window.

The second video shows the more brutal attack on the defenseless pup as one of the drivers drags the dog with its lead wrapped around its neck.

After finally smashing the dog for a second time into the victims head, the owner managed to grab the animal, as the other woman tries to whip her with the other end of the leash.

The police eventually arrived on scene but neither wanted to press changes.

However, after seeing the video in its entirety an investigation into possible animal cruelty is now underway.

'There were initial reports of a dog being involved but the extent was not clear at the time. Officers checked on two dogs in one vehicle and they appeared to be in good health,' Halifax Police said in a statement. 'The severity of actions against the dog were not known at the time.'
