- A driver in Sweden had a heart-stopping encounter with a moose on the road
- Footage shows the animal appearing in front of the motorist in a Tesla Model S
- The car quickly swerved to the side after its installed camera spotted the beast
This is the heart-stopping moment a Tesla autopilot swerved on an icy road in a desperate, but successful, bid to avoid hitting a moose.
Dashcam footage shows the smart vehicle, a Tesla Model S, quickly turning to the side after its on-board camera spotted the wild animal crossing a road in Sweden in the dark.
The electronic car managed to steer between the adult moose and her calves, which was following behind her, and then stabilise itself after going into a slide on the icy road - and was left without a scratch.
Dashcam footage shows the smart vehicle, Tesla Model S, quickly turned to its side after its installed camera spotted the wild animal casually crossing the dark road in SwedenThe video begins with the car driving down a dark icy road, with snow stacked up on either side.
Two moose calves suddenly appear on the side of the road. Whilst one makes a dash into the darkness, the other one casually crosses the road.
The driver hits the brakes but the icy conditions elongate the stopping distance. It seems the car is certain to collide with the animal.
However, the Tesla driver, named David, uses cat-like reactions to swerve around the moose and avoids catastrophe.
The car fishtails dangerously but it soon straightens out thanks in part to some clever technology on the vehicle.

David later posted on Facebook: 'I can barely believe it to be true myself. And that I also managed it without visiting a workshop.'
Remarkably, there is a car test that originated in Sweden called 'the Moose test' during which cars have to swerve round a set of cones, to simulate a moose walking into the road.
Swedish car-makers Saab and Volvo both use this test when making their vehicles.
The Tesla Model S is particularly designed to prevent the car from sliding out of control.
With four-wheel drive, it would send differing power levels to each wheel in order to control the vehicle.
