Anti-judicial reform activists declared Wednesday a “Day of National Disruptions,” with protesters blocking traffic and disrupting train service ahead of major demonstrations planned in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

The Knesset’s Constitution, Law and Justice Committee is set to vote Wednesday morning two parts of the judicial reform package, including the Override Clause, which would enable a majority in the Knesset to veto Supreme Court rulings striking down Knesset laws, and the Judicial Review Clause, which would raise the bar for the Supreme Court to strike down laws. Under the Judicial Review Clause, the Supreme Court can only rule on the validity of Knesset laws if the full bench presides over the case, with 80% of the justices required to vote in favor of invalidating the law.

In protest of the planned votes, opponents of the government’s judicial reform plan blocked roads across the country, including on east-bound Route 1 near the entrance to Jerusalem.

Demonstrators in Tel Aviv blocked the entrances to trains at HaHaganah Station, preventing passengers from boarding or exiting trains.

“It is important to emphasize that these are only a few of the events that we can publicly disclose,” organizers said, hinting at additional measures. READ MORE
