A 30-year-old American Indian woman imprisoned on a 26-month drug sentence died of coronavirus Tuesday, less than a month after she gave birth while on a ventilator.

Andrea Circle Bear had been under quarantine at FMC Carswell, a federal medical center in Fort Worth, Texas, since March 20 when she was moved to a local hospital on March 28 “due to potential concerns regarding her pregnancy," according to the Bureau of Prisons.

She was discharged that day and returned to Carswell, but within three days had developed coronavirus symptoms, including fever and a dry cough.

Circle Bear, who had a pre-existing condition that has not been released publicly, was hospitalized again and placed on a ventilator, according to BOP.

Her baby was delivered by cesarean section on April 1. Three days later, Circle Bear tested positive for coronavirus.

She died Tuesday.

Circle Bear is the 30th coronavirus death reported within the Bureau of Prisons system. At least 1,313 federal inmates and 335 BOP staff have tested positive so far.

She is believed to be the first death at FMC Carswell.

Circle Bear was sentenced to 26 months behind bars in January after pleading guilty to maintaining a drug-involved premises for distributing methamphetamine on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, according to the Department of Justice. The Eagle Butte, South Dakota, woman was found with eight grams of meth.

“Don’t let yourself or your property get mixed up in the world of illegal drugs," U.S. Attorney Ron Parsons said at the time of her sentencing. "It ends badly.”
