The city has delivered more than 32 million meals to hungry New Yorkers since the start of the coronavirus outbreak, according to Mayor de Blasio.
New Yorkers will receive one million meals per day starting next week, Hizzoner said as he took a victory lap at a Thursday press conference.
“What has happened in just the last few weeks … is quite remarkable and something New Yorkers should be proud of,” he beamed.
Half of the food is being delivered at “grab-and-go” sites at 500 schools, which will be serving 500,000 meals per day, the mayor said.
Amid reports of difficulty providing kosher food and complaints of subpar servings, de Blasio said the city has stopped working with two contractors.
City Comptroller Scott Stringer and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams said Wednesday there aren’t enough pantries and supplies in low-income parts of the outer boroughs reeling from the coronavirus outbreak.
They called on the city to analyze which nabes have high food insecurity but few pantries, among other steps.
