Those craving a run in the fresh air rejoiced in Spain on Saturday morning as the country ended its 7-week ban on outdoor exercise amid coronavirus.
Those aged 14 to 70 are allowed to partake in individual outdoor exercise as of Saturday, and for those in towns and villages with 5,000 residents or over, there are certain time windows
Those craving a run in the fresh air rejoiced in Spain on Saturday morning as the country ended its 7-week ban on outdoor exercise amid coronavirus.
Those aged 14 to 70 are allowed to partake in individual outdoor exercise as of Saturday, and for those in towns and villages with 5,000 residents or over, there are certain time windows allocated for each age group or living situation, The Associated Press reported.
In such locations, kids under 14 can walk with one parent for up to an hour from noon until 7 p.m., though they have to be within a half mile from their homes and can’t interact with other kids.
Couples living together can walk from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. to 11 p.m..
People older than 70 can be out from 10 a.m. to noon, and then 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. and if they need it, they can be accompanied by a single caregiver.
Saturday’s activity took off for some as early as 6 a.m. local time and saw many running, cycling, and more — with some donning masks in the middle of their workouts.
The country’s lockdown took effect March 14 and only permitted adults to leave their home and only to do so for essentials like grocery shopping, picking up medicine or walking their dogs.
The nation’s plan to lift restrictions will begin Monday and its stringency will differ based on province.
Spain’s lockdown is considered one of the globe’s most severe, though it’s helped the country to get its daily coronavirus case increases from over 20% to under 1%, the outlet reports.
After Madrid closed a makeshift morgue that the army had previously set up in an ice rink, the capital’s massive field hospital set up by the military closed Friday.
Even so, the country’s reported infection rate is second only to the U.S. with over 213,000 as of late Saturday morning, and over 24,000 deaths, according to a running tally by Johns Hopkins University & Medicine’s Coronavirus Resource Center.
