A city correction officer at Manhattan detention complex with slashes across her face by inmate Michael Haskins.

An angry inmate at a Manhattan jail used a sharp object to attack a correction officer, gouging the woman across the face and leaving her with a deep gash and a split lip that will require reconstructive surgery, sources told the Daily News Wednesday.

Michael Haskins, 41, went after the officer inside the Manhattan Detention Complex Tuesday morning during mealtime with a sharp homemade weapon, correction union officials said.

The wounded correction officer was saved from worse injury by other inmates, who grabbed the attacker and pummeled him senseless. The unconscious Haskins was transported to Bellevue Hospital for treatment for a gash above his right eye and cuts on his left check and the bridge of his nose, sources told The News.

He is currently being held at Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward, Correction Department records show.

“This was totally unprovoked,” Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association President Elias Husamudeen said of Haskins assault on the officer.

“I’m calling for this inmate to be charged with attempted murder,” said Husamudeen, who spoke with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday. “We’re just asking that the DA prosecute this guy to the max, to the fullest extent of the law.”

Husamudeen visited the injured officer for about an hour at Beekman Hospital on Tuesday.

“Thank God for the other inmates who came to her aid,” he said. “If not for them, she could’ve been dead.”

Haskins — who was housed at a maximum security unit prior to the attack — was arrested on May 20 for second degree assault. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 17.

“This is the reason we need a better officer to inmate ratio,” Husamuedeen said. “We need more officers in there. We have the space, we have the room. It would prevent things like this from happening.”
