A man has been crushed to death by a metal beam in a horrific industrial accident in Sydney's west.
Emergency services were called to a construction site on Long Street in Smithfield about 11.30am on Monday after the worker was crushed by a falling steel pylon.  
Bystanders performed CPR on the man until paramedics arrived but he died at the scene.

    NSW Ambulance duty operations manager Inspector Jenny Porter praised witnesses for trying to revive the man. 
    'No one goes to work expecting not to come home. The bystanders who worked quickly to try and save him by administering CPR should be commended,' she told The Australian. 

    'General first aid knowledge, CPR skills and a defibrillator on site provide that best chance, sadly despite everyone's best efforts the patient was unable to be revived.'
    NSW Police and Safe Work NSW are investigating the incident and report will be prepared for the coroner.
    'SafeWork is currently responding to notification of a fatal incident at Smithfield this morning where a man was apparently struck and killed by a steel girder,' a SafeWork NSW spokesperson said.
    'SafeWork will be investigating the incident and preparing a report for the Coroner.'

      Monday's victim is Australia's 92nd worker killed on the job in the year to July 6, 2020.   
      Of those, 28 fatalities belong to the transport, warehousing, and postal employment sector, according to Safe Work Australia.
      The agriculture, forestry and fishing industry accounted for 17 deaths.
