An Army vet from Detroit and longtime employee of the U.S. Postal Service is the country’s first mail handler to die of coronavirus, union officials said.
Anthony Smith, whose funeral was set for Monday, was a postal worker for three decades after serving in the U.S. Army for 12 years, the National Postal Mail Handlers Union said in a statement last week.
He was married and helped raise 15 children, according to the statement.
“Anthony loved music, a good barbeque and singing karaoke,” union officials wrote. “He was a funny man that enjoyed telling jokes and spending time with family. Anthony Smith will be deeply missed by family, friends and all that knew him.”
Smith handled mail at the Detroit National Distribution Center in Allen Park, Michigan.
The only other known postal worker who’s died from COVID-19 is a Bronx letter carrier who had worked in the industry for more than 20 years. The man, 50-year-old Rakkhon Kim, died on March 25, according to the National Association of Letter Carriers.
